Compare the whole journey, not the number of buses
A direct bus is not automatically faster or easier. Traffic and the boarding queue can make rail followed by a shorter walk a better fit. Use the north–south Karasuma Line and east–west Tozai Line as a starting framework, then place your hotel and destination on it.
Search for the destination entrance, not only its name. Similar JR and subway station names need not identify the same entrance, and a short connection on a planner may hide stairs or platform changes. If mobility is a concern, look for a continuous lift-accessible route rather than the smallest advertised minute count.
Ordinary buses and EX buses use different procedures
Ordinary city buses generally board at the rear and exit at the front, with payment on exit. EX100 and EX101 board and take payment at the front, then exit at the rear. Read the route and door signs before joining the queue.
The ordinary fare below is for an adult within the flat-fare zone, not every outlying route. EX services are listed for weekends and public holidays; check the timetable for your date. Reaching a stop is not the same as boarding a bus, so avoid relying on one tightly timed bus before a fixed activity.
| Type | Adult JPY | Pay |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary flat-fare zone | 230 | On exit |
| EX100 / EX101 | 500 | On boarding |
Count only travel you need
The Subway & Bus One-Day Pass costs JPY 1,100 for an adult, with defined inclusions and exclusions. Coverage of certain JR bus routes does not mean JR trains are covered. The old bus-only day pass ceased being usable on March 31, 2024.
Four adult flat-fare bus journeys cost 230 × 4 = JPY 920, below JPY 1,100. Five needed journeys cost JPY 1,150, but there is no reason to add a needless bus ride for a JPY 50 difference. The ordinary day pass lasts until the operating day ends, not 24 hours from first use. Calculate your actual route payments first.
An IC card is not automatically an unlimited pass
A compatible card such as Suica or ICOCA can pay fares, but does not acquire a day-pass benefit simply by being used. Distinguish stored-value deductions from buying a dated travel product. For a family, prepare the appropriate ticket or card for each person and check child rules separately.
Kyoto’s separate IC24H scheme involves advance settings, a designated start and point-return conditions. It is not an immediate automatic cap for every ordinary IC-card user. For a short visit, using a payment method you understand may be more practical than learning a separate scheme. Check balance and phone battery before boarding.
Finish with bags, boarding space and a fallback
If sightseeing would mean moving a suitcase between several places, compare hotel storage, station storage and delivery first. Participating hotels, cutoffs and size limits vary. Do not assume lockers are empty or every property accepts same-day delivery; retain one workable alternative.
Keep bags out of aisles and doors, leave room for people getting off and for passengers who need assistance. At a crowded stop, consider the next bus or a rail alternative without losing track of the last service. Knowing the entrance, route direction, ticket coverage, payment procedure and way home is a sufficiently concrete transport plan.
