List your repeated departures and returns
For several JR trips out of town, begin your hotel search near Hakata. For evenings around Tenjin or Nishitetsu excursions, start near Tenjin. This is a route-based shortlist, not a ranking of the districts’ quality or safety.
Hotels sharing a district label can have very different walks. Compare the relevant station exit and include arrival and departure days, not just proximity to a favourite attraction.
Do not collapse three stations into one
Tenjin subway station, Tenjin-minami and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) are not one platform. Check which station a hotel’s advertised walking time means. Covered passages do not eliminate the need to find a suitable lift and exit.
Compare two hotels using the same line, exit and luggage-storage assumptions. Test the walk mentally in rain or with children. On a short stay, changing hotels within the city may consume more useful time than the saving warrants.
Shortlist by the shape of the stay
Both districts work for a city visit. The question is whether a transfer happens once or repeats every morning. Give repeated journeys more weight than a single attraction.
For airport-focused stays, distinguish international from domestic travel. Neither district wins solely on train time: include the hotel walk, first service on departure day and the route back to collect stored luggage.
| Main pattern | Start your search | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated JR excursions | Hakata | Your actual exit |
| Tenjin evenings and Nishitetsu | Tenjin | Distinguish subway and Nishitetsu |
| Mostly city walks | Either district | Room size, tax and cancellation |
Calculate accommodation tax per person, per night
Fukuoka City’s checked rates are ¥200 below ¥20,000 of taxable accommodation charges per person per night, and ¥500 from ¥20,000. These totals already include the ¥50 prefectural portion. A breakfast-inclusive booking total may not be the taxable room amount; ask the hotel which bracket applies.
For two adults over three nights entirely in the lower bracket: 2 × 3 × 200 = ¥1,200. This is a calculation example, not a room quote. Check whether the booking already collects it before adding a separate payment.
Make the final comparison room for room
Match bed count, smoking policy, floor space and child conditions before comparing prices. Align breakfast and tax treatment. Save the hotel’s answer if late check-in or luggage storage is essential; a good district name cannot guarantee a suitable room.
Record the cancellation deadline’s local time and any payment due on arrival. For two nights, first consider one base rather than a city-centre hotel change. Choose the room that removes the hardest repeated part of your confirmed itinerary.
