Use two neighbourhood blocks, not a city-wide zigzag
This editorial plan separates old Hakata from the Ohori–Tenjin day. It is not a timetable supplied by the attractions, and a compact city does not require adding the coast and Dazaifu as well.
For an afternoon arrival, shorten the first walk. If day two is a flight day, remove shopping before cutting your airport margin. A meal and a rest can be more useful than another stop.

Day one: walk a manageable part of old Hakata
Use the official old-town map to locate Kushida Shrine and Tochoji, then start from the side closest to your hotel. Separate outdoor walking from interiors with opening times or admission requirements.
Put lunch between walking blocks and leave a sitting break before the riverfront. These are active places of worship: keep access clear and respect restricted areas. End near the direction of any luggage collection rather than retracing the whole route.
Keep the yatai evening flexible
A small stall’s queue can take over the evening if visiting one specific place becomes mandatory. Check the official location and operating information, then inspect the menu and prices. An absent daytime opening indicator does not necessarily mean closure that night.
Ask about ingredients and dietary requirements before ordering; choose another meal if suitability cannot be established. Rain or tired companions are good reasons to use an indoor backup, not evidence that the itinerary has failed.
Day two: adjust the park–museum balance to the weather
At Ohori, choose a walk your group can enjoy rather than treating the entire waterside circuit as compulsory. Respect the separate walking, running and cycling paths. Boats and garden facilities have their own arrangements.
The Fukuoka Art Museum offers an indoor alternative, but is normally closed Mondays, or the following weekday when Monday is a national holiday. Verify the calendar and exhibition ticket first. Leave room after Tenjin for luggage collection.
Buy a subway pass only for the rides you intend to take
The checked one-day subway pass costs ¥640 for adults and ¥320 for children. It covers Fukuoka City Subway lines; a ticket-machine purchase is valid only that day. It is not an all-operator pass for JR, Nishitetsu trains and city buses.
Add your intended subway fares before buying. Walking-heavy days may not justify it, and buying tomorrow’s machine ticket today is a mistake. Keep food and paid exhibitions outside the transport calculation.
