Seven or Ten Days in Thailand: Choose One Region After Bangkok

You do not have to choose north and beach together

With Chiang Mai, preserve time to walk the old city, visit temples and explore northern food. Let an out-of-town experience be one day’s main commitment. With Phuket, actually include a day around the beach where you chose to stay; treat an island excursion as a separate outing subject to its operating conditions. Booking a beach hotel and leaving before dawn for a different pier every morning defeats the reason for choosing that property. Even if both regions interest you, saving one for another trip can make this visit feel more complete rather than less ambitious.

Seven days: allocate six nights first

This example assumes arrival and departure through Bangkok: arrive on day one, explore Bangkok on day two, travel to the selected region on day three, spend days four and five there, return to Bangkok on day six and depart on day seven. The nights are 2 in Bangkok + 3 in the selected region + 1 final Bangkok night = 6. Do not count day three again as a full destination day. Its useful time depends on the actual flight and hotel locations. If Bangkok itself is your priority, eliminate the domestic move and add a nearby outing such as Ayutthaya instead.

Ten days: add breathing room before another city

For ten days, use 3 initial Bangkok nights, 5 nights in the selected region and 1 final Bangkok night, making 9. Travel out on day four and back on day nine; days five through eight are the complete destination days. Avoid making a single immovable final day your only chance for a marine excursion. The table is a night-counting example, not a package with confirmed transport. Departing internationally from another airport may remove the return to Bangkok, but verify that flight and its baggage and connection conditions before redesigning the last night around it.

Reconcile flights before buying

In Bangkok, do not treat Suvarnabhumi BKK and Don Mueang DMK as one airport. Write down airport codes, dates and whether arrival requires another check-in for the onward journey. Separate tickets do not automatically protect the next booking after a delay. A final night at the departure base is a buffer recommendation, not a promise that every connection becomes safe. Every additional hotel change also adds packing, checkout and travel to a station or airport. Before counting attractions, check that the two experiences you most want still have enough unhurried time, then remove what competes with them.
