Choose the visit you want
This former detention site in Seoul helps explain colonial repression and the independence movement. Give the people and events in the exhibitions more time than the brick-building photograph. The basement interrogation exhibition includes torture-related material; children and sensitive visitors can choose which spaces to enter.
The hall’s FAQ estimates an average visit at 1–1.5 hours. Gollaba suggests reserving about two hours for reading and pauses, not as an official tour duration. If you book interpretation, build your arrival and exhibition time around its confirmed start.
Admission and separate costs
These are the operator’s individual admission rates. Free or discounted tickets require on-site verification and issuance. Ask which evidence is accepted, especially for an overseas identity document; eligibility does not mean an online checkout will apply the concession automatically. The official FAQ lists cash and credit-card payment for admission.
Two adults and one child aged 7–12 would pay KRW 7,000 for ordinary entry. Transport, meals and souvenirs are extra. The interpretation page describes a paid activity app with admission included, but we have not confirmed its device, language or purchase conditions. Do not buy both products assuming they cover different entry fees.
| Individual visitor | Entry price | Age or verification |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | KRW 3,000 | 19–64 |
| Teenager | KRW 1,500 | 13–18 |
| Child | KRW 1,000 | 7–12 |
| Young child or senior | Free | 6 and under or 65 and over; verify on site |
Closures and last entry
The hall closes on Mondays, or the following day when Monday is a public holiday. January 1 and the days of Seollal and Chuseok are also closures. Recheck the official notices and calendar for your date; this guide does not establish a particular year’s holiday dates or special openings.
The 30-minute last-entry rule does not promise enough time to visit. A winter arrival at 16:30 leaves only 30 minutes before closing. If you are late, moving the visit to another morning is more useful than rushing through a difficult history exhibition.
| Period | Opening hours | Last entry |
|---|---|---|
| March–October | 09:30–18:00 | 17:30 |
| November–February | 09:30–17:00 | 16:30 |
Admission is not a language-tour booking
The dedicated interpretation page lists free docent tours in Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese for groups of no more than 20; children aged 10 and under cannot participate. First-come booking opens 14 days before the intended visit. Some FAQ wording instead says to book 14 days ahead; use the dedicated page’s opening-window wording and confirm the actual date, language and acceptance.
Sunday walk-up tours are listed at 13:00, 13:30 and 14:00, but neither your preferred foreign language nor a place is guaranteed. An admission ticket or group-entry reservation does not replace docent booking. We have not established a cancellation deadline: read the booking conditions and ask the hall if changes are unclear.
Arrive at Dongnimmun, not Seodaemun Station
The official directions point to Exit 5 of Dongnimmun Station on subway Line 3, with the hall within 50 m of the exit. The address is 251 Tongil-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. Save the actual entrance on your map and do not confuse the station name with Seodaemun Station. Exit 5 should not be assumed to provide an elevator route.
For mobility needs, ask the exhibition information desk about the required route on 02-360-8570. Plan your onward meal or destination around Dongnimmun Station. If returning by taxi, save the Korean venue name and address to show the driver; fares and the full journey time depend on your starting point.
An exhibition route and its limits
Gollaba suggests beginning with the former security-office exhibition for context, then the cell blocks and outdoor spaces, and returning to a subject that interests you. This is an editorial route, not a compulsory operator itinerary. Explain the torture-related displays beforehand and let children skip them; a meaningful visit need not include every room.
The operator prohibits food being brought in, pets other than guide dogs, flash or tripod photography and commercial shoots. The rest area is not a dining space. In rain, emphasize indoor exhibits but allow for outdoor movement. We cannot certify step-free access to every display. General enquiries: 02-360-8590.
Your final booking and visit checks
We read the official admission, interpretation, FAQ, directions, exhibition and facilities pages on 10 October 2026. Undated general guidance means what was displayed when checked, not an unchanged rule guaranteed for your travel date. For any reseller booking, separately verify admission versus interpretation and transport, date, language and cancellation.
No currently public Gollaba product was an exact match for this visit, so an unrelated Seoul tour has not been substituted. Use the official visitor and interpretation sources below. If support or a reservation remains unconfirmed, adjust to an ordinary visit or another date rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
- Check the visit date, substitute closure and notices.
- Confirm age rates and concession evidence.
- Match the tour language, age and group-size rules.
- Distinguish a booking request from acceptance.
- Allow meaningful time before last entry.
- Check the station exit and required mobility support.
- Explain sensitive displays, food and camera rules.
- Read change conditions and plan your onward destination.
