Choose the hotel entrance, not just the district
Save the accommodation address and nearest usable station from your booking. Keisei Ueno and JR Ueno are not interchangeable hotel exits. Likewise, a property marketed as Shinjuku may still need a substantial final walk. Find the exit and the route to the actual entrance.
Gollaba suggests comparing two complete alternatives: airport-station access, waiting, transfers and the final walk. With large cases or a stroller, fewer changes and a usable lift route can matter more than saving a few minutes on the train.

Allow for the Terminal 3 connection
Search Narita Airport Station for Terminal 1 and the Terminal 2·3 station for Terminals 2 and 3. A Terminal 3 arrival does not put you straight above a dedicated railway platform. Follow the airport’s station-access signs and check an appropriate assistance route when needed.
On the return, confirm the terminal for the actual flight. Reaching the airport railway station is not reaching the check-in desk. Add the station-to-counter journey when working backwards from the airline’s required airport-arrival margin.
Do not book from the landing time alone
Immigration, baggage, customs and walking separate the scheduled landing from railway readiness. No fixed buffer guarantees the connection. Read change and redemption conditions before selecting a prepaid ticket; a seller’s voucher is not necessarily the final boarding ticket.
For a late arrival, search the actual date and direction. Catching the last airport train is insufficient if the final city connection has already finished. Check an airport-area stay or licensed vehicle transfer as a fallback, without assuming a night bus always operates.
Buy a return ticket only for a real return
Arriving at Narita but leaving from Haneda makes a Narita return product an unsuitable default. Check eligibility, validity and permitted travel order, then compare with two singles only when both journeys will genuinely be used. The N’EX return ticket is not an unlimited city transport pass.
A stay beginning in Ueno and ending in Shinjuku does not require identical airport routes. Plan the two hotel-to-airport connections first and choose tickets that permit them. Rearranging the trip merely to fit a discount reverses the sensible order.
Keep one usable arrival note
Save the hotel address, terminal, first-choice train, fallback, ticket-collection method and final transfer together. Check adult/child categories and seat arrangements for the whole party. It is reasonable to inspect the displayed fare and make the final choice at the airport.
Compare sellers only after matching direction, group, train and seat conditions. A package containing an airport transfer is not the same product as a rail ticket alone. The successful outcome is reaching your accommodation comfortably with your luggage, not riding the most advertised train.
