Separate the two castle palaces from Kyoto Imperial Palace
Ninomaru and Honmaru are different palace areas inside Nijo Castle. Castle admission, admission with Ninomaru, and a timed Honmaru ticket do different jobs. Decide which interior matters to you before comparing a headline price. Otherwise an inexpensive grounds ticket can be mistaken for the palace visit you intended.
Kyoto Imperial Palace is a separate destination. A tour called “Nijo Castle and Kyoto Imperial Palace” connects two city sights; its title is not an all-interiors pass for Nijo. Seeing the decorated Karamon Gate is also different from entering the palaces. Write the exact spaces you want to visit at the top of your booking notes.
Compare adult tickets with the same coverage
The table uses checked ordinary adult official fees. Adding the 1,000-yen Honmaru ticket to the 1,300-yen castle-and-Ninomaru ticket gives 2,300 yen for that two-palace plan. This is arithmetic using the listed tickets, not a total including transport, guiding, separate exhibitions or a special night event.
If you buy only a Honmaru ticket, you still need castle admission. School-age, group and concession categories should be checked separately using your real party composition. Coverage also depends on which palace is open that day. Choose the date before treating two prices as interchangeable, and retain the exact ticket names with your confirmation.
| Ticket coverage | Ordinary adult |
|---|---|
| Castle admission only | ¥800 · palace interiors separate |
| Castle + Ninomaru | ¥1,300 |
| Additional timed Honmaru ticket | ¥1,000 · castle entry not included |
| Castle + both palaces, calculated | ¥1,300 + ¥1,000 = ¥2,300 |
A Honmaru slot is a palace arrival time
Advance Honmaru tickets use a date and time, with booking opening 30 days before the visit. The operator advises allowing about 15–20 minutes from the East Main Gate to Honmaru. Do not plan to reach the outer gate at the appointment time. Complete castle entry and the internal walk first, with extra allowance if your group moves slowly.
Official Honmaru web tickets cannot be changed, cancelled or refunded. The outer castle ticket office does not sell them; a small same-day allocation at the information desk inside is not something to rely on. Ninomaru does not require an advance appointment, but that does not make the Honmaru reservation optional.
Check entry deadlines and each palace calendar
Ordinary castle hours are 08:45 opening, 16:00 last entry and 17:00 closing. Closing time is not the time you may still enter. Ninomaru and Honmaru have separate reception periods and closure calendars; an open castle does not establish that both palace interiors are available.
There is also a specific notice for 6 December 2026: castle admission ends at noon and Ninomaru reception at 12:10. Do not apply the ordinary afternoon deadline on that date. Check the actual calendar for closures, work and events instead of relying only on a remembered weekday rule. Your intended room, not just the castle gate, must be open.
Build the route around the timed palace
Use the operator’s access maps to identify the castle entrance, then calculate from your exact accommodation. Reaching a transit stop, completing ticket entry and walking through the grounds are different tasks. If you reserve Honmaru, keep that slot fixed and arrange Ninomaru and garden time around it rather than treating all three as interchangeable stops.
Photography and video are prohibited inside both palaces. Make photographs in permitted exterior areas and use the interior visit to observe the architecture and displays. The sequence below is an editorial suggestion, not a duration promise, booking guarantee or assertion that every garden area will be open.
| Visit goal | Route principle |
|---|---|
| First visit, mainly Ninomaru | Castle + Ninomaru ticket; gardens if open |
| Both palaces | Fix Honmaru slot; allow internal walking |
| Tour also visiting Kyoto Imperial Palace | Check voucher meeting point, entry and walking |
A guided city itinerary is not a standalone admission ticket
The linked GetYourGuide listing includes an English-speaking walking guide and tickets for Nijo Castle, Ninomaru and the painting gallery. Its checked meeting point is Nakadachiuri Gate at Kyoto Imperial Palace, not Nijo’s entrance. Confirm the final voucher location and do not head straight to the gate shown in this article’s photograph.
Honmaru is not in that inclusion list. Adding it requires separate entry arrangements and a slot that fits the tour’s real finish. Choose the tour for guiding and the two-site itinerary, not because its amount looks like a substitute for ordinary admission. Match date, language, party and cancellation rules at seller checkout; the displayed reference price is not the final bill.
Questions that prevent an unusable booking
Does a Ninomaru ticket include Honmaru? No, you need the separate timed ticket. Does a Honmaru ticket itself admit me to the castle? No, castle admission is separate. These distinctions matter more than a small difference between seller starting prices.
Can I enter any time before 17:00? Ordinary last entry is 16:00, earlier on specified special dates. Where does the linked city tour meet? The checked listing says Nakadachiuri Gate, with the final voucher controlling. Can I photograph the palace interiors? Photography and video are prohibited inside both. Plan exterior photographs without building the whole interior visit around a camera.
Four checks before paying
Purchase only after identifying the interiors and the date. On a timed Honmaru day, move outer-gate arrival well ahead of the palace slot. Save the non-changeable ticket conditions together with the confirmation so another member of your group does not later move the visit casually to a different day.
- Confirm castle, Ninomaru and Honmaru coverage
- Check both palace calendars and special deadlines
- Verify Honmaru slot, no refund and internal walk
