Work back from the last station
Choose where the walk ends before booking the return. You can start at Otaru Station for the canal and continue toward Sakaimachi, or approach the shopping area from Minami-Otaru. Compare reduced retracing with slopes and the final station walk.
The two names do not describe one interchangeable station. Check your train’s stops, luggage-storage location and usable entrances. Keeping large bags at the Sapporo hotel may simplify the day. A map’s walk estimate is not a promise about snow or crossings.
Give the canal and shopping street room
Pick a waterfront stretch rather than rushing between photograph points. In Sakaimachi, choose glass, music-box shops and food according to your interests. Browsing a shop, taking a booked workshop and entering a museum require different amounts of time.
The aquarium and Tenguyama on the city map are not simply more stops beside the canal. Extra transport can change the day’s focus. Use this table to protect a walking-based visit; a long lunch queue is a reason to trim the next activity.
If you plan to buy glass or ceramics, consider the weight for the remaining walk and train. Ask about packaging and decide which optional detour to drop if shopping leaves you carrying more than expected.

A cruise is optional, not a requirement
Compare daylight or evening departure, boarding point, narration language and booking terms. You can enjoy the canal on foot without buying a boat trip. Allow for check-in and waiting as well as the advertised time afloat.
The operator may cancel for wind, heavy rain or snow, water levels or poor visibility. Light rain and a safety cancellation are different situations. Check operating status before departure, then follow the original seller’s refund process if cancelled. An indoor alternative is preferable to seeking another exposed outing in unsafe conditions.
Shorten winter walks and protect the return
The city advises small steps, whole-sole contact and care on downhill sections, boarding areas and the edges of heated pavement. A short mapped route may need a detour or rest. Stop before looking at photographs or directions and respect local restrictions.
For an evening view, consider the subsequent station walk too. Save more than one possible return service and recheck operations. Protect onward dinner or airport margins before adding another activity, and verify this year’s event dates instead of recycling last winter’s illumination schedule.
