Where to Stay in Hanoi: Old Quarter, South of Hoan Kiem or West Lake?

GollabaSource checked: Editorial review:
The short answer

Start around Hoan Kiem if this is your first visit and walking matters most. The Old Quarter suits food and lane exploration; the southern side works for museum and Opera House outings. Consider West Lake when lakeside time is part of the trip, adding transfers to the Old Quarter. No neighbourhood guarantees a quiet room.

Choose the daily route first

Pin each hotel and your first two days of stops on a map. A cheaper room farther away can create repeated transfers when most visits cluster around the lake. These are itinerary-based choices, not rankings of hotel quality.

Check the room, not only the address

Road-facing and internal rooms in one building can feel different. Ask whether the window faces outside, the lift reaches your booked floor and a car can unload luggage at the entrance. For late arrival, obtain written check-in instructions and reception hours.

Add the transfers to the room bill

Compare identical occupancy, nights, taxes and cancellation terms. Add airport transfers and quoted city journeys to reveal the cost of location. This is arithmetic, not a market-price estimate: three nights at A for VND 2,400,000 plus VND 300,000 transport totals VND 2,700,000. B at VND 2,100,000 plus VND 700,000 transport totals VND 2,800,000.

Changing hotels has a cost too

On a short Hanoi stay, consider packing, checkout and waiting time before splitting nights between neighbourhoods. Your next room may not be ready when the first hotel requires checkout. If West Lake is mainly a cafe-and-walk outing, compare keeping one Hoan Kiem base and making one return trip. If most of your time belongs by West Lake, grouping central sightseeing into one day may instead make sense. The decision depends on the actual hotel pin and your itinerary, not a claim that one district is universally better.

Before paying

If the route is unsettled, compare refund terms first. Confirm tour pickup using the exact hotel address, not its name alone.

  • Match taxes, breakfast and occupancy
  • Confirm window, lift and vehicle access
  • Check late arrival and cancellation deadlines in local time
