Turn a destination label into a route
Do not use the broad search term Ha Long as a boarding address. Plot your accommodation, embarkation port and disembarkation port, then check the operating area written in the itinerary. A World Heritage photograph does not mean the boat visits every place pictured. If a particular cave or village matters, look for its exact name among the stops. Heritage status describes a place; it is not a service accreditation for every cruise sold around it.

Separate transfer time from water time
The advertised length of a day trip can include hotel collection, intermediate stops and waiting. Ask for the interval between embarkation and disembarkation, plus time allocated to activities. An overnight itinerary is not necessarily two full days of sailing. If you are already on Cat Ba, do not automatically buy a package priced around a Hanoi pickup: ask for a compatible local joining point and price. A shorter transfer can be more useful than a longer list of activities that receive only a brief stop.
Compare the boat you are actually booking
Similar photographs can hide different vessels and cabin categories. Check balcony, bathroom, bedding, meal count and whether drinks, kayaking and admissions are included before comparing totals. A private cabin is not a private boat. If quiet matters, ask about passenger capacity, music and the planned overnight mooring rather than relying on a claim that an entire bay is peaceful. Keep the operator’s written answer with the booking, especially when a platform offers several cabin types under one product title.
Make room for a changed sailing
A cancelled departure, shortened route and cancelled kayak session may have different refund or substitution terms. Ask who notifies you, when that happens and who pays for a return transfer or an extra night. Avoid placing an inflexible international flight tightly after the expected return. The final decision is not a league table of bays: it is the route, vessel and contingency plan that your whole trip can absorb. Do not treat good weather in a promotional image as evidence of conditions on your date.
