Choose a base around the journeys you will make
Before paying for a view, check whether meals are reachable on foot, whether your chosen tour collects from the property and whether late check-in is possible. A quiet outlying stay can be attractive, but add its meal arrangements and return transfers to the comparison. A bay-view room does not mean the excursion boards outside your door. Save the property pin and the actual departure point separately so an appealing hotel photograph does not conceal a complicated morning.
Give each full day one main purpose
The table is a Gollaba planning example for three nights. Use arrival day to reach the island, eat and understand your immediate surroundings. Before booking, check whether the two middle days can be swapped when operating conditions or the forecast change. Keep departure day organised around confirmed transport, not a long trek that must finish just in time. This leaves a useful distinction between a stay that is short and a stay that feels continuously hurried.

Do not confuse a short route with a traverse
The park distinguishes routes such as Kim Giao–Ngu Lam from longer itineraries such as Ao Ech–Viet Hai. The word forest does not make a route a level stroll. Ask about currently open sections, elevation change, steps, surfaces and the return arrangement, then plan for the slowest comfortable walker in your party. Rain does not automatically make a cave or forest route a safe substitute for a cancelled boat trip. Follow park advice rather than treating every land activity as an all-weather option.
Book the complete island connection
For a Hanoi or Hai Phong connection, identify which road leg, island crossing and final island transfer are included. A ticket ending at a port is not the same as delivery to your accommodation. Ask who rearranges the next leg after a delay and save a working contact. Do not build the return around an assumed permanent ferry timetable. On the island, take litter with you and ask before photographing residents or their work; the destination is a lived-in place, not simply the scenery between excursions.
