Seoul in 3 Full Days: A First-Visit Itinerary That Leaves Room to Enjoy It

Check closures before assigning dates

Gyeongbokgung normally closes on Tuesday, with public-holiday exceptions and a substitute closure rule. The National Museum of Korea has specific holiday and quarterly gallery closures; its official 2026 schedule includes September 7 as a gallery closure date. “Museums are all closed on Monday” is not a safe rule.

Put the palace on a confirmed open day with reasonable weather, then place the museum on another confirmed open day. Treat the time blocks below as our suggested pace, not measured journey or queue times. If you have only two full days plus flight days, remove one whole cluster instead of compressing this plan. Keep an arrival buffer for fatigue and delays.

Day 1: Gyeongbokgung, then Insadong

Start with Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁), 161 Sajik-ro, Jongno-gu. Our suggested allocation is a morning block of about 2–3 hours including orientation, followed by lunch; it is not an official minimum. September–October daytime hours are 09:00–18:00 with last admission at 17:00. The ordinary adult foreign-visitor daytime price for ages 19–64 is KRW 3,000. Free-entry eligibility and special evening events are separate matters.

After lunch, make Insadong the second anchor instead of adding another palace. TourAPI identifies its craft, gallery and tea-shop district at 62 Insadong-gil, Jongno-gu; that is an area reference, not every shop's entrance. Browse the main street and select one tea stop. Allow roughly 1–2 hours as an editorial choice, more if you shop. Each business has its own hours.

Use a live walking route between the exact palace exit you use and your first Insadong stop. If walking is tiring, shorten the afternoon or use transit. Day 2: National Museum of Korea, then Myeongdong

Go to the National Museum of Korea (국립중앙박물관), 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu. It presents Korean history and art; choose a few galleries rather than trying to inspect every object. We suggest about 2–3 hours plus lunch. Permanent exhibitions are free; paid special exhibitions and the reservation-based Children's Museum have different entry arrangements.

Official hours are 09:30–17:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday; Wednesday and Saturday continue until 21:00. Admission ends 30 minutes before closing, subject to the published closure calendar. Ichon Station is the rail access point; the museum's directions show the passage toward Exit 2 and elevator information.

Make Myeongdong your afternoon or evening shopping area. Line 4 provides a useful corridor between Ichon and Myeongdong; confirm the current journey and hotel return. Leave room for one meal and discretionary shopping, not a second citywide sightseeing list. Store hours and restaurant availability are individual, not a district-wide guarantee.

Day 3: COEX at an easy pace

Visit Starfield Library (별마당도서관) inside COEX Mall, 513 Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam-gu. TourAPI lists free entry and 10:30–22:00 hours. It is an open reading and cultural space in a mall, not a ticketed theme attraction. Confirm the venue notice before travel and keep walkways clear for readers and other visitors.

Use the library and mall as one half-day cluster, including lunch. A suggested 30–60 minutes at the library is an editorial allocation; spend longer if you read, less if you only want to see the space. Do not travel across the city expecting a whole day's programmed entertainment from the library alone.

Leave the remaining afternoon for shopping you genuinely want, a café near your hotel or a preselected paid experience. If adding an aquarium or observation deck, verify its separate location, entry rules and ticket; free mall access does not include neighboring attractions. Check the mall's rail directions rather than treating all Gangnam stations as interchangeable.

What this plan costs—and what it does not include

For a foreign adult aged 19–64 paying ordinary daytime palace admission, the three headline venues total KRW 3,000: palace 3,000, museum permanent galleries 0, library 0. That is an admission subtotal, not a daily travel budget. Add your accommodation, airport journeys, city transport, meals, shopping, paid exhibitions and any extra activities.

Prioritize booking the hotel and any timed or limited-capacity activity you choose. Do not buy a sightseeing pass purely because it lists many venues; compare only the paid stops you will actually enter. A guided palace or city tour may add explanation and coordination, but compare its language, meeting point, included admissions and walking load. It is not equivalent to the KRW 3,000 palace entry alone.

Rain, children and a shorter stay

For rain, swap an outdoor-heavy palace day with a confirmed-open indoor museum or COEX day. Do not automatically move every museum plan to Monday; check its actual closure. During dangerous weather, follow official alerts and transport notices instead of treating an indoor destination as permission to travel.

With children or older companions, keep one anchor visit per half day and insert a seated meal. Check the museum's reservation requirement for its Children's Museum and verify elevator routes. Drop optional shopping before removing necessary rest. In summer heat or winter cold, shorten outdoor wandering and keep the afternoon flexible.

Before leaving each morning, check the opening notice, last entry, first destination address, travel route, ticket confirmation if needed, and the way back to your hotel. This itinerary is designed to help you decide; it cannot reserve a seat, guarantee weather or override an on-site closure.
