Read the actual itinerary
“DMZ tour” describes several different products. A common Paju itinerary concerns controlled visitor sites such as the Third Tunnel and Dora Observatory, while Imjingak includes a public visitor area outside that same controlled tour sequence. The JSA or Panmunjom is a separate access question. Do not assume a photograph of soldiers, a border building or a bridge proves that the pictured place is included.
Read the stop list and distinguish a guaranteed inclusion from a possible substitute. Ask whether the tour enters the controlled area, what happens if permission is withdrawn and whether an advertised viewpoint is actually open for the booked date. Save the written answer with the booking. A specific itinerary with clear limitations is more useful than an impressive title that leaves the main visit undefined.

Prepare the original identity document
Paju’s notice requires actual identity documents and does not accept photocopies or phone images in their place. Foreign visitors should check the accepted original document for their status with the organizer; carrying the passport used for the reservation is the straightforward preparation for a typical tourist. Ask about children and any different residency documentation instead of assuming one adult’s paperwork covers the whole group.
Enter names and identification details carefully through the operator’s legitimate booking channel. Do not guess a number to get past a form or send passport images to an unrelated social-media account. Keep the submission deadline, confirmation and meeting instructions together, then physically check that the original document is in your bag before departure. A perfectly completed online form cannot replace the required document at the check.
Leave room for access to change
Paju lists regular closures including Mondays, weekday public holidays and the main Seollal and Chuseok days. Security conditions or weather can also interrupt a visit without advance notice. A commercial reservation does not override those decisions. Check the dated operating notice and the seller’s policy shortly before travel, especially when visiting around a holiday.
Keep a separate Seoul alternative that does not require entering the controlled area. Ask whether cancellation produces a refund, a different itinerary or a choice between them, and which parts of the package those terms cover. Do not schedule an essential flight or rail connection immediately after the advertised return time. Border-area transport and an altered itinerary are poor places to rely on a zero-buffer connection.
Decide whether the tunnel suits the group
The Third Tunnel element involves a confined underground environment and physically demanding access. Assess the specific course with the operator before booking if steep walking, enclosed spaces or a health condition may be a concern. Do not interpret a general tour advertisement as individual medical clearance. Ask whether a visitor may omit the tunnel and where that person would wait under the guide’s supervision.
Build the decision around everyone traveling, not only the person making the reservation. A parent, child or companion may prefer the historical explanation without the underground section. Find out whether the tour can accommodate that difference before payment. Wear the footwear and follow the equipment instructions specified by the operator, and do not leave the permitted route to find an easier unofficial path.
Follow the current camera and movement rules
The checked Paju visitor notice prohibits photographs and video, including drones, throughout the DMZ Peace Tour course. Do not rely on an older travel account that shows people photographing a viewpoint. Put the camera away when required and follow staff instructions without trying to test where enforcement begins. The cover image is of the public Imjingak visitor area, not an invitation to photograph a controlled tour site.
Remain with the authorized group and use only the permitted stops and routes. A delayed companion should contact the organizer rather than trying to catch up independently inside a restricted area. Treat the guide’s instructions as part of the visit, even if they reduce the itinerary or change what can be seen. A respectful trip is about understanding the place, not obtaining a picture at the expense of the access rules.
Compare the service, not only the bus seat
Paju’s municipal shuttle does not itself provide a tour guide. A commercial Seoul departure may add guiding, transfers and coordination, but each inclusion must be stated. Check the language, meeting location, pickup scope, meals and any optional stops, then compare the same itinerary across providers. Do not describe an unguided transport service and a guided excursion as identical products solely because both mention the Third Tunnel.
Keep a final trip note with the original-document requirement, meeting time, contact channel and response to cancellation. Reconfirm any data-submission deadline before the operator’s office closes. If a core detail remains vague, resolve it before buying rather than expecting the guide to fix eligibility at departure. The right booking makes both the permitted experience and the limits understandable in advance.
